One of the most sought-after destinations in Kerala, Idukki provides diverse attractions from wildlife sanctuaries to hill stations. Blessed with picturesque blend of mountains, streams, spice plantations, and wooded valleys, it is the largest district of the state. It has got its name from the Malayalam word 'Idukku which means a narrow gorge. The town was discovered by Scottish planters who liked this city because of its high range and left some fine bungalows. It gives shelter to the South Indias highest peak, Anamudi, along with other 13 peaks with average height of over 2000 meter, and some important river such as Periyar, Thodupuzhayar and Thalayar.
Places of Interest
Idukki Arch Dam- It is considered as the worlds second and Asias first arch dam, built between Kuravan and Kulamavu hills. With the height of 550 feet and width of 650 feet, it is located very close to Cheruthoni barrage.
Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary- the sanctuary is located between Thodupuzha and Udumbanchola, covers an area of 77 sq km at the altitude of 748 meter. It is an ideal place to explore the virgin flora and fauna in Kerala.
Hill View Park- It is one of the most visited parks in Kerala. One can see Wild Elephants in their natural habitat in the park. It is located near to both Idukki arch Dam and Cheruthony Dam, covers an area of 8 acres. The park offers variety of attractions which includes natural water body, pedal boating facility, herbal garden and childrens play area.
Nadukani- It is the perfect place for one-day picnickers. You will fall in love with the sight seeing and panoramic view of the place. A two storey pavilion is the perfect place to explore the landscape and beauty of the nature.
Keezharkuthu- The rainbow waterfall makes it ideal place for picnicking and adventure sports such as rock climbing, mountaineering and camp tracking. Here you can see amazing sight of falling water from the height of 1500 meters. The forest of the area includes various herbal plants
